Why does this song make me think of Frodo and Sam?
The song is "Cannonball", by Damien Rice. It's very simply sung, mostly voice and acoustic guitar. I keep trying to make a video to it in my mind, with scenes from LOTR: "Stones taught me to fly" - scenes from crawling up to Mt. Doom amongst the stones, the rescue by the eagles; "Life taught me to die" - the scene of Frodo and Sam waiting in the midst of the Lava; Sam finding Frodo stung by Shelob; so many scenes where Frodo almost dies; "Love taught me to lie" - the scene where Frodo tells Sam that he should go back; any scenes where Frodo tries to hide his pain, or Sam his knowledge of that pain; any "still a little bit" could be scenes of happiness in the Shire, contrasted with scenes of suffering, or the goodbye at the Grey Havens. It doesn't seem to belong to any specific time in their relationship, but more, all the way through it.

The words seem to fit so well - some spoken by Sam, some by Frodo - except for the "her" at the end, and, of course, the word "cannonball" itself. If you haven't heard it, try listening to a bit of it at Amazon.com.

Cannonball
by Damien Rice

Still a little bit of your taste in my mouth
Still a little bit of you laced with my doubt
Still a little hard to say what's going on

Still a little bit of your ghost your witness
Still a little bit of your face I haven't kissed
You step a little closer each day
That I can't see what's going on

Stones taught me to fly
Love taught me to lie
Life taught me to die
So it's not hard to fall
When you float like a cannonball

Still a little bit of your song in my ear
Still a little bit of your words I long to hear
You step a little closer to me
So close that I can't see what's going on

Stones taught me to fly
Love taught me to lie
Life taught me to die
So it's not hard to fall
When you float like a cannon

Stones taught me to fly
Love taught me to cry
So come on courage
Teach me to be shy
'Cause it's not hard to fall
And I don't want to scare her
It's not hard to fall
And I don't wanna lose
It's not hard to grow
When you know that you just don't know
