iRobot, or Look, Ma, No Hands!
As I sit here, a lady of leisure typing away on my laptop, while at the same time, my utility room is being vacuumed to within an inch of its life. How is this possible, you cry? (or, more likely, mutter) My new iRobot Roomba! Wheeeee!!!!!

Yes, I, the woman who only vacuums when she has company coming, may now become a weekly vacuumer - whoooot! This clever little frisbee-shaped robot bounces softly off of the walls, crisscrossing over the room until it's cleaned. Kitty hair tumbleweeds may well become a thing of the past - as long as I remember to pick things up off the floor and turn it loose on a regular basis.

This is especially gratifying since I've had a cold all Thanksgiving break, which was when I wanted to get the house clean; I'm sure you can guess how much of that I got done. I stayed home from work the last two days, but I think I'm far enough along to be contagion-free and (hopefully) able to think and work, but the truth is that I doubt they'll get much out of me this week.

I DID get my lawn raked and mowed on Sunday, despite my cold and the cold (it was in the high '30's/low 40's). It probably didn't help my condition, but it really needed to be done, and it's only going to get colder.

Enough of that; time for me to catch up on you guys!

p.s. I flashed on a movie I saw on TV the other day called "Little Black Book" - has anybody else seen it? Just a run-of-the-mill "relationships are hell" movie, until the fascinating end, with Holly Hunter going... well... orgasmic as it culminates in the perfect reality TV episode. Wierd, but clever movie.

p.p.s. Seriously... "iRobot"! I wonder if they had to pay Isaac Asimov royalties? Here's a link if you want to see one: http://www.irobot.com/sp.cfm?pageid=122 It's actually a really cool helper for people who are handicapped... as well as those like me who are just plain LAZY!!!! *G*

So what do your kitties think of this machine tooling around on its own?

I wondered that myself, but they seem to be okay with it. They watched it for a while (from the safety of the bed), but didn't try to attack it. It may end up being too boring for them to attack (I hope!). It's quieter than the usual vacuum. Think of it as a little person with a little vacuum carefully vacuuming up little spots. Takes much longer than you or I (about 30 min a room), but it's much more thorough.

Ooooo... pretty icon!!!!

*LOL*!!! Well, I tell you: I actually employed a maid for about 2 years. It was when I lived in my very nice house in Indy, and I wanted to keep the house very nice - which I knew would never happen with my habits. So I employed a very nice woman who came over every two weeks and cleaned it top to bottom. But, of course, I couldn't expect her to pick up my clutter, so I had to de-clutter beforehand. So I figure it'll be the same with this - I'll be forced to de-clutter if I want it to work!

That little robot sounds fabulous (and I think they actually kinda liked paying the Asimov estate). Someday I'll have less junk on my floors, so I could use one of those!

How cool is this? A little disk sort of robot that cleans your floor. That is just too amazing!

Isn't it? Especially when you think of all the complicated devices they've come up with in the past!

Better living through chemistr- I mean, robots!

I know - sometimes you just want to buy something because it's so clever. Like iPhones!

I actually like vaccuuming, but that robot sure sounds great! And if you hate mowing lawns, there's another robot for that too. It seems we've pretty succefully outsourced most chores.

Hulloooooo, Berian! Long time, no see!

I know - it's scary about that, isn't it? I didn't know there was a lawn mower robot, though; that sounds rather dangerous (!). Plus, for better or for worse, a lot of people around here pay somebody else to do it. For some reason, I don't mind it so much. But vacuuming? Not a big fan. *G*

I read an article somewhere about Roomba owners who get attached to their little bots like they are pets. They name them and mourn them when parts are no longer available to service the older models.

I could use one on my hardwood floors to pick up kitty hair. But it would probably have conniptions over all the kitty toys laying around in its way.

I don't know about the kitty toys... loose papers, maybe. I think you're right, though; in looking up about these I found the owners have a forum where they talk about the pros and cons of various models. But a name? Hmmmm... what would be a good name?

SB wants a Roomba so bad. We see them everywhere now that the holiday madness has begun. But if I were to plonk down the cash for a robot, I'd rather get him Mindstorms.

Questionable Content had a mini-arc involving Hannelore's Roomba:

*L*! SB wants one? Ummmm... they're not really fun in THAT way - *L*! I'm guessing he's just curious to see how they solved the problems associated with it. He'd probably enjoy the videos on the site.

Did you decide to take him to Beowulf or not? I have to admit - Grendel himself is pretty disgusting - like a deformed baby with mucus instead of skin - ick!!!

How cool! I've heard about people getting those, but I hadn't heard a real customer testimonial before. And how does it run? With batteries? A cord? Rechargeable thing?

Now if only they would make a decent litterbox robot. I had a Littermaid for a while, and I HATED IT SO SO MUCH. But how hard can it be to design a GOOD self-cleaning litterbox? Get with it, engineers!

Oh, and is that the movie where the girl finds her boyfriend's palm pilot or something with numbers of other girls in it, and they all gang up on him? I remember seeing commercials for it, if that's the same one. With the girl who was in 8 Mile.
