Gomez at The Vic on March 2 2007 - "You didn't hear about the polar bear?"
Gomez at The Vic on March 2 2007|
Lin Brehmer (favorite DJ on favorite station WXRT in Chicago) keeps saying that, if you can see one band in concert, it has to be Gomez. So I bought their album, like the stuff they have out, and went to see them, but I didn't really know much about them. Hell, I didn't even know they were British!
But damn, were they good - very, very strong, with three singers who trade off lead, and solid, yet inventive sound. They weren't just performing; they were into the music and creating it. I'll definitely have to learn more about them.
I took some pics with my Lumix. Good news, lilithlotr
- it was okay to take pics there! Mind you, I snuck it in - a point and shoot - but when I got to the stage (thank you, lilithlotr
for teaching me how to be brave enough, patient enough, and persistent enough to get there) I asked Security if it was okay to take pics without flash and they said yes. Next time... I'll see if they'll let me bring in my good camera - *G*.
So here they are. I believe the guy in red (who kept reminding me of Chris Thile, onecheekyhobbit
*G*) is Ian Ball, the guy in the middle is Ben Ottewell, and the third guy, who reminded me of Mike Mills in REM (the sincere, uncool member of the group) is Tom Gray. Everybody else was too far away, or behind speakers or drums. I do wish I'd seen more off the drummer; he seemed phenomenal.
p.s. The reason I assume the guy in red is Ian is because the woman next to me kept calling "Ian! Ian!", trying to get his attention, when she wasn't flirting with the security guys. Groupie. First time I've seen a real one. *shudders* The really wild part was the family next to me. A mom, and kids ranging from about 6 to 18, who were there because one of the kids did a paper on Gomez, including an interview with the bassist the last time Gomez came through (I assume). Yep. *L*! And, thirdly... I really liked the audience. One of those audiences where you look around and go "I wouldn't mind being friends with all or most of these people. They look interesting, fun, and nice!"
One: I LOVE GOMEZ!!! I have for ages now. That's really cool that you got to see them.
Two: He does look Chris-ish. Heck, if you put the other guy's shirt on the read shirt guy he could pass for Chris's brother. Actually Chris's brother was back stage once, and he's a copy of Chris but taller.
I could marry him. I belive his name was John, which is one of my favorite names... *plots*
I knew somebody on my list mentioned them before - it must be you!
Uhoh... sounds like I better warn Chris' brother. *G*
Have you seen Gomez in concert?
No but I really want to...
I'm posting an Andrew bird thing now... in answer to your other comment.
I doubt you want to risk an SLR at the Vic - the one time I tried it, not only would they not let me in, they claimed I couldn't check it but would have to take it home. Of course, that would have caused me to miss the concert and I nearly burst into tears, and they relented and hid it in the office.
That's exactly what I was worried about happening!
The Lumix pics just don't stand up compared to the SLR, though. And that red shirt made for some great potential photos for the guitarist closest to me!
Hi Ros :-)
He *does* look like Chris Thile!
Thought I'd pop in and say hello . . . Hello!
Hope you are well.
I do like that photo of Billy in your jacket.
Hey, Billy's band (Beecake) are performing at ORC this weekend, and they say they're bringing EP's. If so, would you like me to get you one?
Thank you sooooo much for offering to get one for me :-) :-) I've written to Wednesday Addams re: getting one for me, but if I don't hear from her by tomorrow AM, I'll get back to you. I'm really wanting one.
There's a fair number of us feeling more than a bit panicy as they haven't said if they'll be for sale or only available to people attending the show or what. It will be rather unkind if they are only for the people attending as you all will already be getting to hear them - and live at that. So, I'm hoping they will have tons of them and that they will indeed be for sale.
The whole thing with ELF being cancelled and then hardly any guests being listed for ORC until so late really blew it for me. By the time Billy and Beecake were announced as coming I had commited on a trip to Scotland the end of September and don't have the money free to suddenly pop out to L.A. and pay so much for the convention and all. I've been horribly bummed out over it, so any wee thing I can get from it will help.
I've sent prints of the calligraphy for BLC to auction again, and I sent one for Billy to sign for me, if he has time and will do it when it's not one for auction. If that all works out, that'll be a real boost, even though I won't be there to see him signing it.
I'll let you know tomorrow about the EP!
Thanks again for offering to get one for me!
Pearl aka Sandy
I know - that's a shame about you not being able to go. If Wednesday doesn't get back to you, could you go back to an earlier post I did (just one or two back) and add your name? It was a post where I asked people if they wanted me to get them one, and it's easier to have all the names there. Thanks!
Just heard back from Wednesday Addams. She said she'll get one for me :-) Thanks so much for offering though.
Oh, just had a thought. If you can, pick one up for PipkinSweetgrass and I'll pay for it. :-) I'll put her/my name on that other post!

i really like your blog entry about the show. so much so that i posted it on the gomez board, hope you don't mind. i'm glad you liked the show, they're are such a great band to see live. a bunch of us went on the NW leg of the tour and it was awesome.
That's absolutely fine - I appreciate it! I meant to try to find the band's forum and let people know the pics are here, so you saved me the trouble. Thanks.

join us here! we're a great group of people!
and we're not stalkers or anything. haha!
So, yeah, I'm...these are lovely. And lookit Ian with his collar up, omg!
I'm trying to contain my squee here since I'm just visiting but it's hard. I love these guys so much both albums and live and I often veer widly between being a sane appreciator of their music and just going omgtheyaresopreciouscanikeepthemandcallthemgeorge?!
If you don't mind sifting through some fangirlspeak and CAPSLOCKOMG!1, I have some concert posts over at my lj but no worries if that's not your thing either. =)
I'm just glad to see these guys making some headway here, finally. They are fun, witty and can play the hell out of the stage and their instruments. What more do you need, right? ;-)
This was a great post. Thanks for pointing me over!
Isn't he cute?
Squee is always appreciated and yesyoucantakethemhomeandfeedthemandcallthemgeorge! *L*!
Hey, it's a small world: I watched "The Riches" on FX last night (about a family of gypsies who impersonate a rich family) and guess what song they played at the beginning? "How We Operate" - *G*.
I sometimes jokingly refer to Ian as my Musician Boyfriend (tm) because he is that adorkable and fabulous. Also he has gorgeous hands and a smile that can light up the stage and...yeah. ::shutting up now::
OOhhh Eddie Izzard's new show! We taped it but I'm looking forward to seeing it. I love the exposure they're getting now. They were also on a House ep recently.
Re: squee, seriously, I've only just looked at some of your ORC posts and such but, ehm, yeah. Thank you so much for sharing this stuff with those of us who couldn't be there. I've dled and saved the Beecake doing Arrested. I adore Billy's face and movement when he doe the "Yes, I am" line! heee!
*L*! That's so great - thank you!

hey, this is a great blog!!
awwww, we want to be friends with you, too! we must have been close at the show. i was a couple people over to the right of those kids, on the front row, dancing! you're right about the ian, and you're right about the ian fangrrls! there's one at every show (and no, it's not me!).
re: bringing your SLR into the vic - do NOT do it!! i had a really bad experience at the may 06 gomez show; i came straight in with my luggage from the airport, took the el so no place to drop things off, and stood in line for three hours, during which i asked the staff if it was OK to bring it in. they kept telling me "we won't know until doors open." sure enough, doors open and they turn me around (and gomez themselves have no photo policy, they don't care!). fortunately one of the gomez crew was walking past and secured a photopass for me, but i was told strictly by security "only during the first three songs" and also fortunate for me that though i was held up 20 minutes, i had some friends to help me secure the front-row spot we spent three hours waiting for! whew! so, sorry for the rant, but i wouldn't wish that whole experience on even my worst enemy!
anyway i see someone's posted already about the message board, where you CAN come and be friends with a bunch of us! :) http://forum.gomeztheband.com:8080/

Re: hey, this is a great blog!!
Really? That's a terrible shame about the camera; thanks so much for sharing! And I'll have to come on over - thanks for the invite.
