Question about compressing files!
Say... I'm trying to upload a large file to yousendit, so I thought I would try to zip it. Actually, I apparently have winrar, which converts to .rar files, so I used that. But... the time I got for uploading on yousendit was the same as it was for the unzipped file - about 2 hours.

Any suggestions? The file is about 410 Mb in size. Thanks!

compressing a file doesn't make it that smaller, unfortunately, if it's a video or a picture (or many pictures). they're already compressed, so zipping them (or converting to rar) doesn't change their size.

Really? But when people have a lot of photos and put them up for people to download, I thought they usually zipped them?

Yeah, so they can all be downloaded with one click, not because it makes them smaller. I thought it made the files smaller, too, until Jon explained it to me.

You might have an easier time of uploading something to ysi at another time - the site is probably busy at night.

There are some new filesharing sites that allow larger uploads.

for a Lifehacker roundup. I tried checking out Gigasize, but I don't think it plays well with Firefox. Check out the comments for other options.

Well, it is allowing it, I think... but it takes 2 hours, and it's hard to keep the connection open that long. But thanks!

I see Molly already explained the compression thinamy, but since you have WinRar, there's something else you can do. You can set it to split the file into smaller parts which would presumably upload faster. Then anyone who is downloading the file would just need to get WinRar in order to recompile the pieces of the file. It's easy as pie!
