A slight change in schedule for my "Parade of Bands" - GUSTER!!!!
Despite the incredible lack of response to my first in the "Parade of Bands" posts, I shall endeavour to persevere, and inflict generously share my favorite concert experiences over the last year - *G*. A bit of a shuffle; I'm going to jump back to Guster and then return to the Lollapalooza bands, because GUSTER WILL BE ON CONAN O'BRIAN TOMORROW NIGHT! Okay, their current EP is not blowing me away, but still... if you like Guster, catch them!

Band: Guster
Where: Charter One Pavilion at Northerly Island (by the Adler Planetarium, where Meigs Field used to be) in Chicago
When: July 28, 2006

Why you should see them: Let's see... what words would describe them: punchy and poppy yet grounded and strong, gets into your head, your head bops and you sing along at the top of your voice in your car, ironic, wistful with a side of angry, clever, quirky. Give them a listen. What I like best about their sound is what I like best about most of my favorite bands: you can really hear the different instruments, and there's a layer of counterpoint, including most of the vocals being sung in harmony by the two lead singer. There's acoustic blended with electric, and a unique percussive sound coming from the drummer doing most of his work with his hands, rather than with sticks. One of their CD's almost always goes on in the car when I drive long distances. They're a an improbable blend of lyrics about the way we are, rather than the way we want to be - but in a strangely cheerful manner.

Strangely, when I went to see them this time, I couldn't get out of my head the fact that the two lead singers and drummer reminded me of the following people: Main lead singer - Pete Townshend; Second lead singer - a clean cut '60's Beach Boy; and the drummer? *L*! BEN STILLER PLAYING DRUMS! *LOL*! I kid you not - check out the video!

Where and when YOU can see them: They're touring all over the country in the next month or two, including San Diego, Portland, and Seattle (to all of you living in those places!); check out their schedule at their website

I was hoping to get to something there this summer, but it looks like it's not going to happen

It was a pleasant surprise, and they had trolleys from the parking (under Soldier Field) to the concert.

Any way to get there via public transportation, did you notice? I went to Metromix to look, but it didn't say (and I got distracted by a photo of Kill Hannah on their search page)

Good question. The normal trolley service ends at 6 pm; otherwise it would be great, since it goes to the museum campus. I don't know if they also set up trolleys to go from there to someplace with a public transportation connection, as well as back to the parking garage.
