And the answer is... the Shot Tower in Austinville
See here: http://www.state.va.us/dcr/parks/shottowr.htm

Yep, points go to zanne68! They built this big tower out in the middle of nowhere, on the bank of the New River, to make lead shot. They'd drop molten lead from the top through a grating or sieve (to control shot size). It would form perfect spheres on the way down, land in a basin of water, and cool. *G* And there are only 3 in the USA. And it was in the early 1800's - the time of "Master and Commander", toosiemuppet! I saw it as I was driving through Southern Virginia and went "wtf?" It was just out there, off the highway, in a little tiny park. Cool. *G*

If you want more details, click on the adobe file link on the site; pretty cool!

God, I'm such a geek. *G*

(Watching "House"... man, MUST he destroy the one friendship he has? God, I'm loving seeing both Wilson and House in this episode. Can I just say... what beautiful eyes they both have. *sigh*)

*dances!* They should do more slashy things. Last episode wasn't slashy at all. Meh.

*G* Good to see at least one fellow geek out there!

You know, I just realized why this is fascinating - it's because of all the times we hear about the sailors chipping rust off the cannon shot, to make sure it's perfectly smooth. Which, of course, is just as important for rifle or gun shot, and it would be hard to make it smooth in a mold.

I know, and I'd actually wondered about that, but just assumed they did it would molds.

Wiki gives the explanation that molds were too expensive. I guess I can see that.
