Why, thank you, I shall... *G*
Watching the original King Kong in glorious black and white!
Sorry, PJ, you know I love you... but you just didn't do right by Driscoll (the male love interest, who, in the original, is the first mate of the boat a grumpy woman-hater who goes all mushy around Anne Darrow... just like Kong does... *G*) and Carl Denham, the guy who makes the movies. They're actually very well-played in the movie, as is Anne. I thought I'd go back and find them to be too hokey for words, but, really, they're played just as they should be. I also didn't like PJ adding the gruesome, horrific villagers of Skull Island. To be honest, just about everything about the the original movie works better, script-wise. Sorry, Phillippa, PJ and Fran! And, sorry, Jack Black, but this Carl comes across as smarter and stronger - as does Driscoll.
And I remember now why I felt so badly for King Kong in the original. He went through so much to protect Anne (okay, it was also to show he was the big guy in the jungle), that you actually feel badly for him when Anne gets away! And, whoa... did the original director like showing skin! I forgot about that - pretty risque for that time - all bare legs and the suggestion of nothing on top, by the time she has her dress peeled off by Kong and she's in the water. And finally, the death scene... he looks so confused and sad, the big ape. You feel so sorry for him.
As to the great ape himself? I always had a soft spot in my heart for him... but I must have forgotten the terrible full-face closeups of that looks like an early attempt at animatronics - obviously fake (and human!) eyes, and a mouth that goes straight across, with picket fence teeth - *L*! I'm afraid it looks like one of the horribly racist drawings of the time, instead of an ape. On the other hand, the claymation ape is wonderful, just wonderful. HIS expressions, especially at the end, are so touching.
So - PJ, I love ya, but you shouldn't have tried to change the movie, except for the special effects. But, at the same time, that wouldn't be worth doing, would it? Nope, keep it as it was. *S*
