Jumping on the ROTK Challenge Bandwagon...
but, hey - it's such a good one to jump onto! *G*

So: Sorry to see ROTK signal the end of the movie trilogy? Wondering how you can help the spirit of LOTR and Tolkien live on?

Then go here for the announcement of the Return of the King Challenge: http://www.livejournal.com/users/poppyh/17465.html?#cutid1

and here for the site itself: http://www.rotkchallenge.org/

In short, it's a challenge to fans to give as much time and support to causes that are in the spirit of Lord of the Rings as they have towards the films themselves. Think of all the hours spent watching the movies or talking about them on-line, as well as the money spent buying action figures (wheeee!) or even going to conventions. Wouldn't it be wonderful if every fan spent as much time and money on a worthwhile cause, one that would benefit the world, and whose effects would outlast the movies, or possibly even the books?

The idea is simply to challenge fans to give of themselves to charities that one would imagine Tolkien would support - charities that promote literacy, preservation of the environment, and aid to wartorn peoples. The purpose of the site is to help to promote the challenge and provide a place for people to share and build upon their experiences. No money passes through the site; all donations are made outside of it. In addition, please note that the three charities involved have all been notified of this effort and have given their approval, and the site itself has been scrutinized by New Line to insure that it is not stepping on any toes.

I hope that, if you haven't already, you'll visit the site, see for yourself that it's a worthy and trustworth effort, and spread the word, through the LJ-community and beyond. And if you have any questions or concerns, please let me or the site staff know. I realize that, with all of the scams on the internet, people are (rightly) skeptical about efforts like this, but I can vouch for the people involved myself.

Anyway, thanks for reading this, and whether you get involved in the Challenge or not, I hope you'll keep the idea in mind as you make your resolutions for the New Year...
