"Beowulf": If you're going to see this, see it in IMAX 3-D - it's worth it! Not a great film, but not the commercial rip-off I was afraid of. It actually follows the original story very well (even down to the torn-off arm over the doorway of Heorot), but with a sad, terrible Gollumesque Grendel, a hero who is flawed in a very understandable way, and an added connection between the two main stories of the poem that adds depth to the story. I liked it better than I thought I would but it's still best to go in with low expectations and feel free to laugh at some of it if you feel like it. *G* Apparently Neil Gaiman was a co-writer on the script.
(Note to ninquelosse: I tell you, as soon as I saw the dragon I thought "SB has to see this!!!!!", but I'm a little torn about whether to suggest you take him or not. There IS a lot of violence (of course!) but the animation makes it a bit less gory, and there is some nakedness (although in terms of private parts, Beowulf's are cleverly hidden, Grendel apparently has none, and Grendel's mother's are airbrushed over)... but I *think* that if he was able to handle LOTR he should be able to handle this. Because, boy oh boy is he going to like the dragon!!! *G*)
"Enchanted": Fun and clever, but requiring a high suspension of disbelief, and don't go looking for any deep messages here. Best part was finding the Queen's helper strangely familiar, even as a cartoon... and then realizing why! *G* Again, not a great movie, but a fun one, and certainly well-timed, since it's one the whole family can enjoy together.
Games: Fandango actually has some fun ones - including (YAY!) a MAKE YOUR OWN BAG PUPPET creator! Also, for you fellow mah jong solitaire fans out there, they have a very good holiday one, where each tile is an open gift box. You can find them here: http://games.fandango.com/allgames.aspx. Warning: if you intend to save your puppet, register and/or log on beforehand!
Silly Things: The Glarkware site (seller of snarky merchandise and partner of that snarky television site - darn, what's it called... the one that does synopses of TV shows like LOST? - ah, that's it - Television Without Pity) sells obscurely funny T-shirts (like one based on House called "Cane and Enabler" with an image of a cane and a bottle of pills) and other silly stuff such as:
Band buttons - for classical composers - *G*
Cards to give to people who are rude in movie theatres
Cards to give to people who are rude, period! (I'd never give these out, but, boy are they tempting!)
You can find them here: http://www.glarkware.com/productcart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=5
Aaaaaand... I was supposed to clean house these two days and have done NOTHING!!!!! Hopefully I'll be more motivated this weekend. Have a good one, y'all!
