They're onto me...
Or, "Is this the beginning of the end?"

Only a few months after getting a MySpace, my sister-in-law just contacted me to be her friend.

I love my sister-in-law - she's wonderful! - but I want to be free and anonymous on the internet. I don't want to worry about my family and what they might think about what I'm into or what I say.

Is it just a matter of time before somebody finds my LJ? *hugs my LJ tightly*

Are you using the same name and stuff? If so...your days are probably numbered. ;-)

No... I'm really not familiar with MySpace, but they do ask for your email - maybe she found me that way? And I do use my real first name there, but it's not my... ummm... site name? Not sure what how it works, like I said.

I asked her how she found me, but haven't heard back yet.

Can't you just tell her that? I told that to my RL best friend and he understood.

Well... apparently my brother and my two nieces are also on MySpace and everybody else she knows, so her feelings would be hurt.

And once somebody knows you, there's nothing to keep them from taking a peek, even if they haven't been friended, you know?

I get a bit concerned about my LJ sometimes, and then I go and f-lock all my posts. Because 'honeyfitz' is the username for nearly everything I do, my LJ is easily traceable. I've just had to open up second hotmail/youtube accounts with different usernames for stuff I do at work. The last thing I need is one of my school kids reading about my drunk tales at the Expo party :D

I had students of mine track me down on Prodigy long long ago. Now I use this name and no one but no one knows who the heck Sorka is unless I want them to know.

Don't tell me you used the same name! You might just have to change the name on one of these.

I'm pretty darn careful about what I say about myself on my LJ or who I share stuff with. No one I know at work, or in my family knows who I am here. Oh, I take that back, I have attached to my will that is in my brothers safe, a note on contacting people online here if anything bad happens to me, but I know my brother well enough to know he isn't interested in looking at it.

Nope, I didn't use the same name, and I just have my first name on the LJ. Still not sure how they found me.

omg... I thought about making a will and doing the exact same thing!!!

You could friends lock your LJ, then no one that you haven't friended will be able to read it!

*sigh* I know... but I don't want to do that. I like to meet new people here - and I want people to visit and see my photographs.

Ah, well!

Yeah I completely understand you.
I failed it because when I created the account on LJ I was sooo excited and let my friends know the adress :P

Btw, if you're ever bored, you could add me. I'm pretty harmless and hardly ever comment. ^_^ www.myspace.com/niroc_blackthorn

*G*

You know... I'm beginning to think I may not add anyone other than bands. Because, I really don't want to be split between LJ and MySpace, and I only went on MySpace to friend the bands so I could get info and comment on their sites. But now it's becoming a mishmash (and that's with only the handful of people who have found me over there!). Plus, it's under my real first name, and I don't give that or any other personal info out here.

So - don't feel bad if I don't friend you; I may be unfriending everybody except the few who are there as band supporters. (((hugs)))

If you can keep your fandoms apart, you should be able to keep the fandom and the family apart, even online. Of course it's always risky...

Yeah, myspace is bad like that, I think. Make sure in your settings you have it set so that you won't come up when people search for your real name. I had not realized the default, so even though my profile name was just "Sara" and my username was not related to my name, if people searched for "Sara Burch" I would still come up, even though my name was listed nowhere on the profile. I fixed that up quick!

EEK. Friends locking might be a good idea Ros. I had to do that when my dad found my LJ...lol. Luckily he has long forgotten about it, but I still feel better locking things up.

Well, I've pretty stubborn, and I've been holding out so far. I'm going to call my brother's family this weekend and let them know I'm de-friending everybody on my MySpace, because I don't really use that journal for keeping in touch with family, and just don't want to start with all that craziness. Now one of my nieces wants to "friend" me there, so... it's started!

Funny thing is - I didn't know any of them blogged!

Heeheee....

I understand exactly where you're coming from. There's nothing I do on here that's really anything bad, but it's nice to have that shroud of anonymity.

I think I've separated my fandom identities enough where they don't scream 'HERE IS SUCH AND SUCH!!!' to 'real life' people, but some at work know, mainly because they think it's a hoot and harmless. You know it's probably ok when you've shared smut with them. lol Family honestly would probably not care, except to wonder when I tell them I know someone from online. I have found some of my younger relatives on MySpace and I'm starting to think I might be tame compared to some of the stuff I've found them sharing online anyway. lol The universe is gonna seem to turn on itself if/when one decides tried to friend me not knowing who I am. :D

"You know it's probably ok when you've shared smut with them." *L*! Yes, that's probably true! *G*

My workplace is someplace I definitely wouldn't want to do that in - *G* - and my brother and his family are incredibly great people, except for the fact that they think homosexuality is bad (*rolls eyes*) and they're almost-Baptists, so if they realized I like slash, I don't know what their reaction would be, and, to me, it's personal so I don't really want to share it with them.

Thanks!

My nephew's girlfriend and I were chatting once after a few drinks and we got on the subject of LiveJournal and we're all like "I'll friend you" Thinking rationally about it later I thought Eeek! I don't need my real life to cross over into my online life. She must have thought better of it because she never friended me either.

I think your plan to keep MySpace for bands and keep LJ secret is a good one. I friends lock all my posts, but I so appreciate your open posting of your photo albums.

Eeek, that's precisely why I've never had a MySpace account. Anyway, I don't WANT to talk to my coworkers or former school mates. If I wanted to talk to them, I'd BE talking to them already. (And I do, sometimes. But there's nothing I need to broadcast to them.)

I only know one other person in RL who has an LJ account (apart from my two best friends who I asked to join just so they could see my flocked posts). She's my coworker. We've talked about LJ life and stuff, but hee, neither of us has ever asked or volunteered our username or asked to be friended. Hurrah for anonymity (and understanding and not feeling the need to pry.)

Darn you... you have quite a collection of perfect icons.

Good for you and your co-worker - very wise course!
