Quick Update on "The Riches"
This is the new series that Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver are in. It's just finishing up, and it looks terrific. I don't consider these spoilers, but just in case, I'll put this under an lj-cut. (sorry for all the spamming; it'll go on until the ORC stuff is all up)

Gotta love a series that opens with Gomez ("How We Operate" - *G*) and ends with Bob Dylan ("Shelter from the Storm"). And Eddie - despite the fact that he's doing a "House" and doing an American accent - is brilliant.

Eddie is the head of a family of "travelers" (another name for British gypsies) in America, living in a trailer, and on the way to pick up his wife (Minnie Driver) from prison, where her term just ended. They pretend to be guests at a homecoming (and wedding) and "pick up" gifts" along the way. Before picking up Minnie, though, they get pulled over by a policeman - which is how wer learn they're travelers, since he can tell who they are. They get away, but lose the gifts.

Minnie is upset at her poor reception when picked up - only to find that there's a large convention of traveler families gathered to welcome her home. We find out that live with the traverlers is not simple. There are feuds between families, and a new head of the travelers. Eddie makes off with some of the head of the travelers' money. Later they meet up with another family of travelers who catch onto the fact that they're plush, and want in on it. This turns into a road race. Somewhere in the middle of it all, another car gets forced off the road, and the drivers are killed. The family shows their humanity, but, in the end, Eddie realizes they have an opportunity to move into the house the other family was going to move in to... and impersonate them. The neighbors, realtor, etc. don't even know them.

There ARE complications. Minnie picked up a drug habit in prison, which only the daughter knows about. The son feels guilty about the whole thing. And the dad? Hell, he just managed to hustle his neighbors at golf!

In other words - this family is going to find out how "The Riches" live.

OOOOO!!!! And now I'm seeing an ad for "The Race" - with Nathan Fillion! It's coming up on FOX.

Life... is good.

Yeah I liked the Riches quite a bit. I was fascinated with how well Eddie hid his Brit accent and adopted a fairly believeable American one.

I am very familiar with the Travelers...I find them repulsive by their lack of human decency...Hurricanes happen and you can depend upon traveler con folk to con some poor senior citizen out of their savings with some bogus home repair scheme. Thats sort of what that big guy said regarding his "termite" scam. Had I not been so fond of Eddie I and Minnie Driver I would never have watched this program.

But then, I am weak and so I watch it. So far it seems fairly well written.

Ah... but, at the same time, they're (usually) very close-knit and supportive of family. I've never heard the term "Buffers" (as in, people called "Buffy" and "Skippy", and such, perhaps?) used for non-travelers, or perhaps just rich non-travelers, but, basically, non-travelers are non-people to them, so rules of morality don't apply. Of course, that's wrong, and I don't condone what they do - but it's very right to them, and if you're brought up that way, loyalty is everything.

I hope they touch on that, because that's part of what I liked about this opener. The shock of the accident made them care about the people in the car, in a way that they usually don't care about "others". And the fact that they're going to start fitting into this new community means they're going to be torn between "we're here to con them" and "we like these people". And then there's the feeling of being torn from the family they've always known, as the wife is feeling so strongly. You get the impression the husband's tie to fellow travelers isn't as strong.

Yeah I can see the wife is strongly tied to her family but then she is also a member of the ruling family, THAT helps! However, maybe I went to the bathroom during the last part but I dont seem to remember that anyone was reminding Mama that the Traveler FAMILY was going to marry her daughter to that moron-looking hayseed. No deliberation there, it was already seen as a done deal.EEP! Good reason for daughter to stay with Dad.

Oh and lets not forget Mom is a junkie!

I can appreciate their family values of loyalty and close-knit stuff but its all built on a society that is out to con everyone. I am especially irked and maddened by those people who con the elderly out of their savings, something the Travelers do.
I hope this doesn't sound racist but at least with the gypsy families you have a good idea who you are dealing with. We have a large gypsy population here in Portland, I could even take you by the home of the local "Gypsy King". I can avoid them. The Travelers blend in just too well, which all part of their con. My fear of running into them is pretty darn strong.

Still, I think The Riches is going to be a pretty interesting story to follow.

You mean, the Romanian Gypsies? Yes, I see what you mean. But, I agree - anybody who makes their living conning people - especially the vulnerable - is despicable.

Thanks! *G* Yes, it looks like it could be a very good series, with possibly high-quality writing. It didn't "dumb down" the whole concept.
