This and that...
Having fun this week and last watching DVD's. First I got though my Dark Shadows DVD's - the first four weeks from when Barnabas Collins first appeared (about a year into the series), or about 20 half-hour episodes. Really wild seeing this again - it's from 1966 (!). Perfect "background" TV, because you know soap operas - everything is streeeeetched and repeated. Gawd the acting and dialogue is awful at times! But the theme music and atmosphere really have an effect once Barnabas (Jonathan Frid) appears. Fun!

Right now I'm in the middle of "Firefly" and loving it! Damn - I knew the plots and dialogue and characters were good, but how did they make it look so REAL with a TV episode budget? And, god bless them - when something explodes in space, you don't hear a thing. *G* YES!!!!!!!!!! Already got to see th "Captain Tight Pants" episode, and got to hear "shiny" several times, along with lots of Chinese cussing. Sure wish I knew Chinese - *G*.

Then there's the bad (but completely expected) news: I got an "unacceptable" for my evaluation at work, just as I expected, so I'll definitely be looking for a new job. I'm not distraught; I'll be glad to leave. I just never fit in there - always felt out of step. I figure I'll be quitting about February or March. I may take some time off and go to Florida - it's beautiful down there this time of year. Not looking forward to the job search, but I'm going to try to be as positi as possible, and I have funds to last me a couple of years if necessary.

Still watching Firefly - damn this is good! *G* I feel badly for not giving it more of a chance when it was on originally. Ah, well, nobody's perfect. *S*

Speaking of which - I think I deleted 1/3 of my Scotland pics before putting them on my computer! They were the ones with the pics from the deer farm. I thought I'd put them all on my computer, but I guess not. But my puffin pics are safe, so that's good. *S* [ETA: I FOUND THEM - WHOOOOOOT!!!!!! They were on my computer after all!]

I felt the same way about Firefly when I watched the DVDs - why didn't I check this out when it was on TV? Urgh, argh.

I'm sorry the job didn't work out. You'll find the right place.
Until then, a place in the sun? That sounds reaaaalllly good right about now. *shivers*

Doesn't it? *G* I'm a bit jealous of you, though - sounds like you're really enjoying the library courses!

You're following me, aren't you? :p

What is Dark Shadows, anyway? It used to be on SciFi Channel a lot when I was in middle school and I could never quite tell what it was.

*L*!

Was it really? It was basically a half hour soap opera about the Collins family - rich New England gentry - through the eyes of the young girl who goes to work for them as a governess. Can you say "gothic"? Sure you can. *G* Don't know what happened in the first year, but in the second year, their "cousin" Barnabas comes to visit. This signaled the start of "Dracula" meets soap opera. You have the strange servant, the innocent girl being slowly taken, the creepy house, the smug vampire that nobody suspects, the "what are these strange marks?" - streeeeeetched out over several episodes. The show suddenly caught on, then, because nobody'd really done something like this in a soap opera format before. Every episode ended up as a little cliff hanger. Ever see Dr. Who? Which also ran in half-hour shows, but here in America they would show it all in one night? Very similar pacing... and production values - *L*!

Eventually they introduced a sexy nemesis, Quentin... and to really make it different, I believe they started flashing back to 100 years ago, when Barnabas became a vampire, and all of the present-day cast basically became their counterparts of 100 years ago. Like the flashbacks to Angel's past on Buffy... only this came first.

Corny... but nicely creepy! *G* And while I'm sure you wouldn't think so now, the guy who played Barnabas did a good job as being both evil and tortured. Like a lot of vampires in today's story, you hate what he does, but feel a bit sorry for him and root for him at the same time. *G*

Goodness, sweetie! I'm glad you have a positive attitude about your job, or soon to be lack-thereof. I hate that kind of crap. Though I will probably be going through the same thing in the not so distant future.

As for firefly - I did the same thing. I feel bad for abandoning Joss. It's pretty terrific, isn't it?

*G* It is! I've been zooming through them because: A) I've seen bits and pieces of most of them, from SciFi channel re-runs and B) I want to leave it at my brother's, so he can watch them. So it's been kind of neat seeing it all compressed; gives me a better idea of what Joss Whedon was after.

Actually, Firefly-Chinese isn't quite Chinese. It's close, but Chinese is a tonal language. In Firefly, they don't use Chinese tones, but English intonation. In both Mandarin and Cantonese, every syllable either rises, or rises and falls, or stays flat, or does one other tone I don't remember, and that often determines which word you're saying. Take that all out, and and you have entirely too many homonyms to be certain what somebody means to say most of the time. {chuckle, Smile}

I know, I'd heard that. *G* Actually, the page that somebody directed me to uses numbers (from 1 to 5) after the syllables to indicate if it's rising, falling, etc. Thought I was going crazy seeing all those numbers until I saw the note at the top of the page explaining it!

Ow - did that happen to you? Yes, it's something I'm constantly paranoid about! *G* One reason why I want to organize my photo CD's and get everything copied off of my computer, but it's hard to get ahead.

Excellent Mal icon! Yep, saw "Serenity" when it came out - they did a terrific job on it, I think.

Guess I'm gonna have to borrow that DVD set from Steve after all... he and Liz always rave about that show. I just don't know when to find time to actually watch anything! :-O
Sorry about the work thing, but it's good that you have backup money and that you are happy leaving... so, go you! And yes, Florida that time of year is perfect! Hehe... back when I quit that telemarketing job it was that same time of year and I went to FL with the family :-)

First I got though my Dark Shadows DVD's

Ooh, I know what I want for Christmas! (The scariest monster they had before Barnabas arrived was a Phoenix, I kid you not.) As for the job, bah! Piss on 'em. You'll be much happier elsewhere.

*L*! Thanks. Yep, it's worth it just for the nostalgia... but it's much too expensive to go and continue. Can you imagine how many DVD's it would be for a YEAR of this?

That's too bad about your job... I know how it feels to just not fit in. You really are positive about it though, and good for you for saving enough to keep going. Finding something that you love to do and can make a living at is something I've not yet discovered how to accomplish.

Hey... I'm right in the middle of the Firefly discs too! I got them for my birthday, and I'm trying to make them last. WHY THE HELL did this show ever get cancelled?? I think it was just too good for tv... I'm like you... sorry I didn't jump on when it was airing.

"Finding something that you love to do and can make a living at is something I've not yet discovered how to accomplish. " - DITTO!

And - ditto again! I know - I think we're all saying that. I give myself credit that I did at least watch the first one. I think I thought that it was too much of a stretch, making it so "Western" in the future, and also thought that Mal was too much of a Han Solo ripoff. In other words, I just didn't have faith in Joss. Plus, if I remember correctly, it was on Fridays. Guess they thought "it worked for X-Files, it'll for another scifi show" - but I never remembered to watch it on Fridays.

Glad they made a movie, which got me to watch the DVD's!

Thanks!

Hey, I loaned the CD's to a bluegrass fan and he loves them - but are the River Ramblers still together or not?
