Waiting to hear from HannColl... - "You didn't hear about the polar bear?"
Waiting to hear from HannColl...|
So, anyway, I'm watching The Daily Show, and there's Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. talking about the possible link between the use of thimerosal in vaccines and autism. Now, that compound (which I'm assuming was used as a preservative) isn't used in most vaccines today, he's saying, but is still in vaccines being used overseas, and states that autism, that was practically unknown in China, now has something like 1.6 million cases. Jon's asking "why are the companies fighting against it so hard?". RFK's answer: "pharmaceutical company is terrified of litigation, and a resistance on the part of the people in government who okayed it to admit it to themselves". (RFK is sounding a bit odd; don't know if it's nerves, or he's getting over laryngitis, or some other vocal problem?) Apparently RFK, Jr. got into this because of his work in the environment and on mercury in the environment.
Now, I know there's been a lot of controversy about this; for example, the counterargument is that the real reason for the rise in occurrence is because of a greater recognition of the problem, and therefore more of them being diagnosed, or that it's due to diet or other factors.
Well, what I'm interested in then, is: if it's not being used in vaccines anymore, then we should see a decrease in occurrence, starting from that date. In other words, it should be posible to check that theory out, now. HC - any idea if there has been a stop in the use of thimerosal (so what are they using to preserve the vaccines now, though?!), and, if so, how long it's been?
Anyway, HC - just happened to catch this, and thought of you, because I know it's something you have an important interest in. I hope you're okay; I know you were worried about how your chest was feeling, and decided to get checked out at Urgent Care. Give us a post, soon - I hope you're okay, but just too busy to post.
We were just talking about RFK Jr. after reading George Will's article on factory farming (another reason why I don't eat bacon, even if it does smell good). Interesting to hear what he's working on now.
I really didn't even know there was an RFK, Jr. *reddens* Silly me. Any idea if he has a speech impediment? Seems odd that he should sound so nervous, if he's a public activist. Oh, well!
HC...Give us a post, soon - I hope you're okay, but just too busy to post.
I just want to second that! *hugs to you both*
I just checked and she posted, and she's fine. They kept her overnight for observation and told her to see her doctor (because of her family history). Sounds like she did the right thing, though.
Oh, good. Thanks for letting me know! :):):)
I've just downloaded that particular episode of the Daily Show so I can watch it this weekend (my Kennedy fetish and Jon Stewart fetish collide!)...
Oooo! Details? My friend HannColl will probably want to see it...
My mun did a lot of research on autism for her Master's Project - there's a lot of .... interesting .... theories out there on both the causes and treatment of autism. Not a lot of people today realise that it's been around for several hundred years (at least).
Vaccines are administered in the same window that autistic symptoms usually show up. Coincidence does not equal cause. (Having written that, she is open to there being some environmental factor in the increase in autism of late.)
True. And the problem has been, how do you untangle the coincidences from the causes?
As a scientist, it would be interesting to see whether, if current vaccines do not have thimerosal, this causes the autism rate to decline.
It's always difficult to untangle the incidence of a disease from increased awareness about it... for example, are more people depressed now, or is the incidence the same, but it's being recognized more now?
Oh, and Isengar? Your counterpart on Battlestar Galactica is looking quite sexy. I do think he should grow his hair longer, though. *sigh* And I'm still dying to hear if your mom got to watch the "other Jamie" (the one played by Billy Boyd in the Taggart episode) and what she thought of it! She's much too quiet. *S*
VERY interesting... thanks!
My Hannah is autistic too. However, in her case I don't think the vaccines were the trigger. She had chronic ear infections from 18 months till she was about 2 1/2, and they caused febrile seizures. I think that was the beginning of her symptoms surfacing. I don't recall it coinciding with her vaccines. Also, there may be a history of asbergers on her fathers side of the family.
My belief is that different children have different triggers that cause the condition to develop, or not. Some kids, it's heredity, some it's vaccines, some it may be environmental, like high power lines or contaminated drinking water.
Of course, like the scientific community, I still have more questions than answers. Why did my daughter become more impaired than her father or grandfather? Is it her sex? Is it the time fell during one of her seizures and hit her head? Why are first and fourth born children more likely to be affected? Does it have to do with the age of the mother? Why are boys affected 4x as much as girls?
I too am very interested to see if the numbers decrease in coming years now that they have changed the vaccines. I sincerely hope so!
Exactly... has it been hard to show a cause because there are multiple causes, or triggers, possibly?
First and fourth born? That's one I hadn't heard before.
